History of the depertment

 

The Department of General Surgery of CSMU was founded in 1933 on the basis of 2nd city hospital under the guidance of Professor Hess de Calve K. P. Its medical staff included the Professor and his two assistants. Only in 1937 the number of medical staff increased to 4 people.

 

The scientific interests of the department were focused on the development of new trends in the field of blood transfusion.

 

From 1943 to 1951 the department was headed by Professor Rise A. B. During these years practical medicine and medical studies were concentrated on the treatment of persons wounded during the Great Patriotic War. The department staff worked on the problems dealing with Physiology and maldigestion, Anaesthesiology and Osteomyelitis.

 

From 1951 to 1954 Zakharov E. I. head the department. In this period of time the department staff focused on the study of stomach surgery and introduction gastrojejunoplasty in clinical practice.

 

In the period of time when Shastin N. P. was the Head of the department (1954-1957) the department staff paid a lot its attention to the issues of asepsis and rendering emergency aid.

 

Professor Berdonosova T. I. headed the department from 1957 to 1972. Under her guidance the areas of focus were urgent surgery, functional condition of gastrointestinal tract after the gastric resection, pathogenesis and pathomorphology of pancreas, diseases of peripheral vessels.

 

From 1972 to 1973 the Head of the department was Kulchitskiy P. E. who introduced surgical stapling equipment in the abdominal surgery.

 

Professor Fesenko V. P. was the Head of the Department of General Surgery from 1974 to 2003. The diseases of thyroid and organs of digestion, items of purulent surgery and osteomyelitis were studied under his guidance.

 

From 2003 tо 2008 Khadzhiyev O. Ch. headed the department. The research interests were concentrated on the study of the pathologies of thyroid gland, diseases of alimentary tract, vascular complications of diabetes mellitus, problems in the treatment of pancreonecrosis, peritonitis.

 

Since 2008 Kostyrnoi A. V. has been the Head of the department. Under his guidance the clinical staff researched the problems associated with the traumas of abdominal and thoracic cavities, pathologies of thyroid gland, purulent peritonitis, pancreatic diseases, oncopathologies of gastrointestinal tract, diseases of vessels and arteries of lower extremities and abdominal cavity, herniology, problems of gastric and duodenal ulcer, emergencies of the organs of abdominal cavity.

 

Since then 3 post-doctoral and 14 Ph. D. theses were defended at the department.
