The Head of the Department of Surgical Diseases of the Faculty of Post-Diploma Education is Starosek Viktor Nikolayevich, Laureate of State Prize of Ukraine, holder of Laureate’s Diploma of the International Academic Rating “Zolota Fortuna”, Honoured Doctor of Ukraine, chairman of the Crimean Association of Surgeons. His post-doctoral dissertation titled “Post-necrotic Complications of Acute Pancreatitis” was defended in 1990. Director of clinic since 1992. Author of 168 studies and study guides, 12 inventions.
Professor Starosek V. N. was born in 1944 in the city of Okha in Sakhalin in a family of military pilot. In 1961 he entered the Crimea medical institute. He was very interested in surgery, participated in the student scientific society. In the period of study he was called up for active service in the Armed Forces in the USSR. 3 years he served in the Strategic Missile Forces. After graduation from the Crimea medical institute in 1970 he worked as a surgeon in the hospital at the junction station Bikin in the Far East.
Since 1973 Starosek V. N. worked in the Crimea medical institute. He continued improving his skills in the clinical residency under the guidance of Professor Toskin K. D., worked as a senior laboratory assistant, actively continued his research work.
The results of his studies are gathered in his Ph. D. thesis “Omentopancreapexy in Surgical Treatment of Acute Pancreatitis” (1977). Starosek V. N. worked as an assistant of the Department of Theoretical Surgery at the Crimea medical institute headed at that time by his teacher and mentor Professor Toskin K. D. In 1982 Starosek V. N. was elected Assistant Professor. In 1990 he defended his post-doctoral thesis titled “Post-Necrotic Complications of Acute Pancreatitis”. Numerous studies of Starosek V. N. were devoted to surgical pancreatology His findings in this field are very important in modern medicine.
Since 1991 Starosek V. N. is Professor of the Department of Theoretical Surgery, later he became the Head of the department.
In the Crimea medical institute Starosek is known as a talented researcher, teacher and organizer. Under his guidance they study topical issues of surgical pancreatology, develop new approaches to treat the traumas of parenchymatous organs, the ways to prevent postoperative complications in abdominal pathology. Under the guidance of Starosek V. N. 5 Ph. D. theses, 1 post-doctoral thesis and 8 Master’s theses were defended. Viktor Nikolayevich is the author of over 200 studies and 10 inventions.
In 1996 Specialized Academic Council for Surgery was organized in the Crimea medical institute due to the active participation of Professor Starosek V. N., who was its chairman within 2 years.
Talented surgeon and wise teacher, he gives all his experience and professionalism to his students, who successfully work not only in our country, but also abroad. Viktor Nikolayevich organized and held the first surgical chair at the faculty of post-diploma education in the Crimea medical institute and opened its branch in Kherson. His lectures, practical classes, practical workshops, his surgical operations are of great importance for both young and mature surgeons. On 6 August, 2004 Professor turned 60 years old and marked 35 years of his practice, research, pedagogical and social activity. The Honored Doctor of Ukraine, the Laureate of State Prize of Ukraine, member of the board in the Ukrainian Association of Surgeons, chairman of its Crimean department, Laureate of the International Academic Rating “Zolota Fortuna”.
Professor Starosek V. N. saved thousands of his patients and helped thousands of them to recover. Professor Srtarosek is known for his high professionalism, modesty, kindness, honesty, intelligence, righteousness, and philanthropy.
