The head of the department of Hystology and Embryology is Shapovalova Elena Yuryevna, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences, embryologist, histologist, author of 93 scientific works and 10 study guides, 9 of which were written and published in English.

She was born on 23 March, 1958 in Simferopol in a family of doctors. She finished specialized secondary school №9 of Simferopol, where a number of subjects were taught in English. In 1981 graduated with with distinction from the Medical Department of the Crimea State Medical Institute. During the years of her study at the institute she attended student society of the Department of Histology and Embryology and published one scientific article.

After graduation from the institute she worked as a senior laboratory assistant at the Department of Medical Biology for a year. In 1983-1986 she had been doing postgraduate studies at the Department of Histology and Embryology. Under the supervision of Professor Brusilovsky A. I. she wrote and successfully defended her Ph. D. thesis  titled “Early histogenesis of the auxiliary apparatus of human eye”. The following years she worked as a senior laboratory assistant, assistant and Assistant Professor of the department. 1999 – 2003 she had been pursuing higher doctorate at the Department of Biochemistry of the Crimea State Medical University named after S. I. Georgievsky. In 2003 she successfully defended her doctoral thesis “Organ Characteristics of Early Histogenesis of Derivative Embryonic Leaves in Human” (academic advisors: Professor Lutsik A. D. and Professor Efetov K. A.). From November 2003 she has been the head of the Department of Histology and Embryolgy of the Crimea State Medical University named after S. I. Georgievsky.

Her scientific interest is the organ characteristics of histogeneses in the prenatal ontogenesis in typical and atypical implantation in human. Shapovalova E. Yu. is a scientific advisor on the scientific theme of the department “Mechanism of Prenatal and Postnatal Histo- and Organogenesis in Typical and Atypical Implantation”. She runs lectinohistochemical and immunohistological laboratory, which helps clinicians in their researches.

Besides, Shapovalova E. Yu. holds a course in Histology, Cytology and Embryology and gives practical classes in two international languages: English and Russian.
