1st Convention of Medical Students, Warsaw, Poland 2007

On the 3rd of May, 2007, the Crimea State Medical University (CSMU) named after S. I. Georgievsky has put another step further into excellence after establishing its first self-planned convention of medical students held overseas.

Organized by the Students’ Scientific Society (SSS) of CSMU, in collaboration with the Crimean branch of the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA), this convention withholds its purposes to promote scientific research works among medical students; exchange views on medically-related topics; and broaden students’ knowledge scope of medicine.

The delegation of 88 students along with 3 lecturers, namely Dr. Andrey D. Sakhaltuyev, Senior Lecturer in Internal Medicine and Vice-Rector in International Relations of CSMU; Professor Alexander K. Zagoroulko, Head of Department of Pathologic Anatomy and Professor Muniver T. Gafarova, Head of Division of Epidemiology, embarked on a bus and train journey on the 30th of April and arrived in Warsaw on the midnight of 2nd May. 15 groups acted as active participants, 3 out of which were poster presenters, and the rest presenting orally.

On the night of arrival a medical talk with regard to “Medical Career Opportunities in Malaysia” was given by the Deputy Honorary Secretary of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), Dr. Kuljit Singh. The following day, the Convention was held and was honoured by the presence of the Malaysian Embassy delegates; the Ambassador of Malaysia to Poland, Her Excellency Rusmidah Zahid, together with the 2nd Secretary, Mr Ahmad Fajar and 3rd Secretary, Cik Haniah.

The winners for poster presentation were Ramesh Rao Subba Rao and Santhana Peiathamby from group 421, with the topic on ‘Effects of external and internal factor upon the Circadian Rhythm’. The first place winners for oral presentation were Tan Jeng Yih, Vinvie Hee Wei Huo, Lam Sin Wei from group 528 with the topic ‘Healing of burn by treatment of Bronchiole-Alveolar Protective complex : BAP complex (Experimental Stage)’. Second place winners were Nur Nadia Azhani, Kishan Theaharajah, Liyana Binti Ahmad Farid, Rahayu Fazleen Binti Radzuan from group 228 presenting the topic ‘Enhancing learning abilities of students based on gender differences’. The second runner-up winners were Chong Pick Har, group 203; Fatimah Shahidah Binti Azmi, group 220; Ellis Sebai Bandak Anak Richard Mani, group 217, with the topic ‘Interaction of sensory modalities and cross-modal effects on perception in human’.

The next day, all students were free to tour around Warsaw. Among the famous and most visited tourist spots that were visited included Staroe Miasto (Warsaw Old Town), Arcadia Shopping Complex, Galeria Centrum, Palace of Culture and Science and etc. Some students even boarded a 9-hours bus trip to Krakow, another mesmerizing city well-known for its old buildings and various museums.

On the 5th of May, 2007, the delegation returned to Simferopol. Though time was short, all participants had fun tremendously, and each came back with happy faces carrying bags full of souvenirs.
